Café de Tantes (meaning ‘the Aunties Café’) opened in September 2006.
With a professional coffee machine donated by the Dutch Consulate, a group of six enthusiastic volunteers opened the doors. We now have ten volunteers!
Each Wednesday, residents from Independent Units, Hostel, High and Special Care Units come to enjoy the Tantes coffee, cakes and lunches.
Wednesdays have also become a day to look forward to for both the staff of Prins Willem Alexander Village and the residents’ friends and families.
As the requests for Dutch delicacies increased, the need for a shop became apparent. So, by May 2007 “Bea’s Winkel” (Bea’s Shop) was born! The shop is named after its’ most dedicated volunteer, Bea van der Giessen who is also an Independent Unit resident.
Regularly, de Tantes have “Special Wednesdays” such as our very successful “Nasi Wednesday” or “Satay Wednesday”. Especially enjoyed by our Indonesian/Dutch community. This year we will be having Dutch croquettes on the 1st Wednesday of every month.
De Tantes success has meant that we have a direct ability to help improve the quality of life for our residents by donating various items either for resident care (i.e. air mattresses or wheelchairs, etc) or by simply purchasing items to improve their surroundings (i.e. the “Koempoelan”, our Therapy Room).
The atmosphere and joy that Café de Tantes has brought to the Village and its’ residents is what makes the volunteers jobs so rewarding and why we come back every week!
So, if you are passing by, on a Wednesday, do pop in for our famous coffee and cakes – you’ll notice us – we’re quite bright!
